Transducer Shields vs Armor Plates: Which One Does Your Boat Actually Need?

Transducer Shields vs Armor Plates: Which One Does Your Boat Actually Need?

7th Jul 2026

Modern marine electronics are a significant investment, and protecting your transducer is just as important as protecting your sounder. Whether you're running Lowrance, Garmin or Humminbird equipment, a damaged transducer can quickly become an expensive repair.

One of the most common questions we receive at Boaters World is:

"Do I need a Transducer Shield or an Armor Plate?"

Although they both protect your transducer, they serve different purposes and are designed for different mounting locations.

This guide explains the differences so you can choose the correct Transducer Shield & Saver product for your boat.

What is a Transducer Shield?

A Transducer Shield is designed to protect side imaging and scanning transducers that are mounted somewhere other than directly onto the transom.

Most commonly these are installed on:

  • Jack Plates
  • Hole Shot Plates
  • Boat Setbacks
  • Trolling Motors

The shield completely surrounds the transducer with a heavy-duty aluminium housing while maintaining the correct sonar angle and allowing the transducer to perform exactly as intended.

Besides protecting against impact, the streamlined design also helps minimise drag and reduce debris collection.

What is an Armor Plate?

An Armor Plate replaces the factory mounting bracket found on many transom-mounted transducers.

Unlike a Transducer Shield, which is designed for jack plate or setback installations, an Armor Plate is purpose-built for direct transom mounting.

Manufactured from heavy-duty 6061 aluminium alloy, Armor Plates provide protection from:

  • Forward impacts
  • Rear impacts
  • Side impacts
  • Accidental knocks during launching and retrieving

They are also pre-angled to maintain the correct scanning angle for your boat.

When Should You Choose a Transducer Shield?

If your transducer will be mounted anywhere other than directly on the transom, a Transducer Shield is generally the correct solution.

Typical installations include:

  • Hydraulic Jack Plates
  • Manual Jack Plates
  • Hole Shot Plates
  • Boat Setbacks
  • Trolling Motors

Depending on your installation, the shield is normally combined with one of the appropriate mounting accessories including TSS L Brackets or mounting wedges.

When Should You Choose an Armor Plate?

If your transducer is mounted directly onto the transom of your boat using the factory mounting location, an Armor Plate is generally the preferred option.

Armor Plates are available for many popular transducers including:

  • Lowrance Active Imaging HD
  • Lowrance TotalScan
  • Lowrance StructureScan
  • Garmin GT Series
  • Humminbird XM Series

Unlike a simple replacement bracket, an Armor Plate provides far greater protection against accidental impacts without compromising sonar performance.

Why We Recommend the Spring-Back Bracket

For the highest level of transducer protection, Transducer Shield & Saver recommends combining Armor Plates with the Stainless Steel Spring-Back Bracket.

The Spring-Back Bracket is designed to absorb impacts from submerged objects by allowing the transducer to pivot backwards before automatically returning to its original position.

Instead of transferring the full impact into your expensive transducer, the bracket absorbs much of the force.

If you're investing in premium sonar equipment, this extra protection is well worth considering.

Choosing the Correct Mounting Bracket

If you're installing a Transducer Shield onto a jack plate, you'll also require the correct mounting bracket.

Boaters World stocks genuine Transducer Shield & Saver mounting solutions for many popular jack plate manufacturers including:

Selecting the correct bracket ensures the transducer sits at the proper angle while providing sufficient clearance around hydraulic rams and moving components.

Choosing the Right Transducer Shield

Different sonar manufacturers use different transducer housings, so each Transducer Shield is designed specifically for its intended model.

Some of our most popular options include:

Which Option is Right for Your Boat?

The answer comes down to where your transducer is mounted.

  • Mounted on the transom? Choose an Armor Plate.
  • Mounted on a jack plate, setback or hole shot plate? Choose a Transducer Shield with the correct L Bracket.
  • Looking for maximum protection? Pair your Armor Plate with the Stainless Steel Spring-Back Bracket.

Choosing the right mounting solution from the beginning provides better protection, easier installation and helps ensure your sonar performs exactly as intended.
